Having survived cancer at the age of three and not being able to eat solid food for 18 months. My family were just so glad I survived, and I was able to have whatever I wanted. That’s where the bad food habit started.
During my school years I was constantly bullied about my weight, which just made me eat more. At the age of 13yrs I was a whopping 15 stone! I was in a dark place with no self-esteem and no confidence, and as a consequence my GP treated me for depression at this very young age.
I became subdued and withdrawn from family activities. The only comfort was food; I used to eat in secret, and eat so much till I felt physically sick.
By the age of 15 I was suffering with severe mobility issues, I was in constant pain and my weight was out of control. I was diagnosed with a rare form of arthritis, weight-related. The only comfort again was food. By 17yrs I was 22 stone, and had never been in a relationship. I felt worthless – eating was how I coped with feeling unloved and feeling like a freak.
I threw myself into work and trained as a baker, where I could eat all day doing the job I loved. Within 5 years I had reached 29 stone.
In 2005 I went on holiday to Peru, and there I met the love of my life – my wife. For the first time in my life I felt loved for who I was. I also became a dad to my stepdaughter! I was so happy; we ate, we drank, and celebrated, but my weight made me sad.
In 2010 my wife was pregnant with our child. I was so excited, but in the back of my mind I knew I wouldn’t be able to play like other dads.
By 2015 I was nearly 32 stone, and my weight interfered with my business and time off because of exhaustion due to weight. In the end I lost my business. At this point I hit rock bottom; useless as a husband and father, I wanted to run away.
I knew I needed to lose the weight and go on a diet, but I tried them all and nothing seemed to work. I watched a TV program about embarrassing fat bodies and Cambridge Weight Plan was mentioned. I googled it and thought about it for a few weeks. I then decided to find a Consultant and start CWP.
I started in Feb 2015 and it took me 18 months to lose half my body weight! As my weight dropped, my wife decided to start CWP too and has also lost 4 stone. I feel like a new person!
I now have my life back for me, my wife and my children. As a bakery owner this has been a massive challenge, but I have had amazing support from my customers who have watched me disappear in front of their eyes! My wife and kids have a confident dad who can join in instead of watching from the side lines.
